In plain words
Kimi K2 is a chat assistant from Moonshot AI. It’s the earliest and lightest Kimi you can pick in chatmodel. Its main trait: it thinks before it answers, so it’s comfortable with puzzles, sums and questions that need a few steps.
It understands photos and helps with code, like spreadsheet formulas. It doesn’t read PDFs or search the web in chatmodel.
How to get the most out of it
- Give it every number. Nights, people, amounts. Then ask it to show the steps.
- Ask for a hint first on puzzles, if you want to keep the fun of solving it yourself.
- Describe your spreadsheet when you need a formula: which column holds what.
- Paste text instead of uploading PDFs, or take a clear photo of the page.
How it compares with the rest of the family
Kimi has four chat models in chatmodel. Kimi K2.5 and Kimi K2.6 are newer steps of the same K2 line, a bit more capable. Kimi K3 is newer and more capable than the K2 line, and the only Kimi here that reads PDFs. Kimi K2 is the lighter pick for step-by-step questions.
When to pick another model
For long documents, try Kimi K3 or the PDF chat tool. For recent information, pick GPT 5.5, which can search the web. For warm, personal writing, try Claude Sonnet 5.
