In plain words
Kimi K3 is a chat assistant from Moonshot AI, and a step up from the Kimi K2 line in chatmodel. It thinks before it answers, so it’s slower than lighter models but steadier on important or delicate questions.
It understands photos and reads PDFs, which makes it the Kimi to pick for paperwork. It doesn’t search the web in chatmodel.
How to get the most out of it
- Upload the whole document. There’s no need to cut it into pieces first.
- Say what you want out of it. “The costs”, “the dates”, “what I have to do”. A focused question gets a focused answer.
- Share the background for big decisions: ages, budget, distance, what matters most to you.
- Ask for a checklist you can take to a visit or a meeting.
How it compares with the rest of the family
Kimi has four chat models in chatmodel. Kimi K2, Kimi K2.5 and Kimi K2.6 are the K2 line: lighter, and they help with code, but they don’t read PDFs. Kimi K3 is the newer generation and more capable than the K2 line.
When to pick another model
For quick everyday questions, Kimi K2.6 is often enough. For recent information, try GPT 5.5. For long documents, the PDF chat tool gets you started, and Claude Opus 5 is another careful choice.
