In plain words
GPT 5.5 is a chat assistant from OpenAI. You type a question or a request, and it answers in a few paragraphs, a list or a draft you can use.
It’s a good all-rounder. It can write, explain, plan, read photos and documents, and search the web. It also thinks before it answers, which makes it slower on hard questions but more careful with the details.
How to get the most out of it
- Give it the background. “I’m 58, I rent, and this letter is from my landlord” gets a far better answer than “what does this mean?”.
- Say what you want back. A short summary, a list of steps, a draft email under 100 words.
- Paste or upload the real thing. The actual letter, the actual recipe, a photo of the label. It works much better with the real text in front of it.
- Ask for changes instead of starting over. “Make it warmer”, “cut it in half”, “less formal”.
- Ask it to check the web when the answer depends on something recent, like opening hours or a price.
When to pick another model
If most of what you do is writing, like letters, stories or long emails, many people prefer the tone of Claude Opus 5 or the quicker Claude Sonnet 5. For a side-by-side look, see ChatGPT vs Claude.
If you work a lot with Google-style long documents and photos, try Gemini 3.1 Pro. Not sure where to start? Read which model should I use.
