In plain words
Gemini 3.1 Pro is a chat assistant from Google. You can type a question, upload a document or send a photo, and it explains what’s there.
It thinks before it answers, so it’s a good fit for questions with several steps, like splitting a bill, reading a statement or planning a budget. It’s often at its best when you give it something to work with: a PDF, a photo, a list of notes.
One thing to know: in chatmodel it doesn’t search the web. It answers from what it already knows and from what you share with it.
How to get the most out of it
- Upload the document instead of describing it. It can read the whole thing.
- Ask one clear question at a time. “What’s the notice period?” works better than “tell me everything”.
- Ask for the format you want. A table, a checklist, or “three short bullet points”.
- Ask it to show its working on anything with numbers, so you can check the steps.
- Paste in recent facts yourself if the answer depends on something new, like a price you were quoted.
When to pick another model
If you need up-to-date information from the web, choose GPT 5.5 or Claude Sonnet 5. If your job is mainly writing, like letters or a speech, many people prefer Claude: see Claude vs Gemini.
For a long, careful read of an important document, Claude Opus 5 is another strong choice. You can also try the PDF chat tool.
