In plain words
GPT 5 mini is a chat assistant from OpenAI. It’s the smaller member of the GPT 5 generation: built for everyday questions, and quicker than the bigger models.
Even so, it thinks before it answers, reads photos and documents, and can search the web. It’s a sensible default when you want more care than a fast reply, but don’t need the most powerful model.
How to get the most out of it
- Ask one clear question at a time. It handles focused requests well.
- Tell it to search when the answer depends on something recent: “check the web for this week’s hours”.
- Ask for steps when you want to understand something: “explain it step by step”.
- Give it a format. “A short list of pros and cons” or “a table with three columns”.
How it compares with its siblings
It’s a step up from GPT 4o mini, which answers straight away and can’t search the web. GPT 5 is its bigger sibling from the same generation. Newer light options are GPT 5.4 Mini and GPT 5.6 Luna. For the hardest jobs, look at GPT 5.5 or GPT 6 Astra.
When to pick another model
If you write a lot of letters and long emails, many people like the tone of Claude Sonnet 5. For a document you want to question in detail, try the PDF chat tool.
