The 8 tests, picture by picture

The same description to both, one try each, nothing retouched. Press “Try these words” to make your own.

Test 1 · A poster with real words on it

A poster with words on it: GPT Image is bolder

The description both got

A vintage travel poster with the words "VISIT LISBON" in bold letters at the top, a yellow tram climbing a steep hill at sunset, terracotta rooftops and the river in the distance, mid-century illustration style, flat colors

Winner: GPT Image 2.5 Flare. Both spelled “VISIT LISBON” correctly. GPT Image made a bold poster with the yellow tram climbing the hill above the rooftops and the river. Flux 2 Pro's tram is small and on a flat street, and there's little of the hill or the view.

Test 2 · A card with a name on it

A card with a name on it: GPT Image, ready to print

The description both got

A birthday card with the words "Happy 60th, Maria!" in elegant gold letters, surrounded by spring flowers and a small cake with candles, soft watercolor style

GPT Image 2.5 Flare Made in about 12 seconds Winner

Flux 2 Pro Made in about 10 seconds
A card with a name on it, made with Flux 2 Pro

Winner: GPT Image 2.5 Flare. Both wrote “Happy 60th, Maria!” correctly. GPT Image made the card itself, big and full of flowers. Flux 2 Pro showed a small, pale card against a pink wall, so the words and the cake are much smaller.

Test 3 · A warm family portrait

A family portrait: a tie

The description both got

A smiling grandmother in her sixties picking ripe tomatoes in a sunlit vegetable garden, straw hat, soft golden evening light, natural skin texture and laugh lines, shallow depth of field, 50mm documentary photo

A tie. Two warm, believable grandmothers picking tomatoes. GPT Image went for golden evening light and a basket of tomatoes. Flux 2 Pro looks more like a quiet documentary photo, with her looking down at the plant. Both look real.

Test 4 · Food that looks good enough to eat

Food that looks good enough to eat: GPT Image

The description both got

A homemade apple pie with a golden lattice crust on a rustic wooden table by a rainy window, a wisp of steam rising, cinnamon sticks and a cup of tea beside it, cozy autumn kitchen, food magazine photo

Winner: GPT Image 2.5 Flare. GPT Image put the pie front and center with the rainy window, the tea and the cinnamon sticks, plus apples and autumn leaves, and it feels cozy. Flux 2 Pro has everything we asked for, but in a grey kitchen that feels less like autumn.

Test 5 · A pet portrait

A pet portrait: GPT Image gets closer

The description both got

A fluffy orange cat asleep on a sunny window seat next to a stack of old books and a potted fern, soft morning light, warm and cozy home photo

GPT Image 2.5 Flare Made in about 12 seconds Winner
A pet portrait, made with GPT Image 2.5 Flare
Flux 2 Pro Made in about 10 seconds
A pet portrait, made with Flux 2 Pro

Winner: GPT Image 2.5 Flare. GPT Image made the sleeping cat the star, next to a tall stack of old books and the fern. Flux 2 Pro's picture is sunny and real, but the cat is smaller and the “stack of old books” is just two.

Test 6 · Something that could never happen

Something impossible, a dog on the moon: a tie

The description both got

A golden retriever wearing a small astronaut helmet sitting on the surface of the moon, the blue Earth rising behind him, footprints in the grey dust, playful, photorealistic

A tie. Both made a golden retriever in a helmet with the Earth behind it. GPT Image's dog is bigger, clearer and happier, but the footprints are human boot prints. Flux 2 Pro drew paw prints too, though its dog looks a little stiff.

Test 7 · A scene from a dream

A scene from a dream: GPT Image fills it with light

The description both got

A giant whale made of clear glass floating above desert sand dunes at sunrise, sunlight refracting through its body and throwing rainbow patterns on the sand, a lone traveler looking up, photorealistic, wide shot

Winner: GPT Image 2.5 Flare. The description asked for sunlight throwing rainbow patterns on the sand. GPT Image spread them across the dunes under a big, sparkling whale. Flux 2 Pro's scene is lovely, with a traveler shading his eyes, but the rainbows cover only one patch.

Test 8 · A painting in a classic style

A painting in a classic style: GPT Image looks more like watercolor

The description both got

A watercolor painting of a small Tuscan village on a hilltop with cypress trees and a winding road, loose brushstrokes, soft pastel colors, white paper showing through, painted by hand

Winner: GPT Image 2.5 Flare. We asked for loose brushstrokes and white paper showing through. GPT Image's painting is light and loose, with white paper around the edges. Flux 2 Pro's is careful and realistic, closer to a detailed painting than a quick watercolor, with little white paper.

What it costs, in plain words

OpenAI and Black Forest Labs each sell their own access. In chatmodel, GPT Image 2.5 Flare and Flux 2 Pro are both included in Pro, with every other image model, so you can try the same idea with several of them. See the current prices on the pricing page.

Can you trust the pictures?

Both spelled every word right in our test, but that isn’t guaranteed. Before you print a card or a poster, read every word on it, and check that everything you asked for is there: Flux 2 Pro sometimes leaves parts out. And remember the pictures are made up: don’t use them to show something that really happened.

How we tested

We wrote 8 descriptions of the pictures people actually make: a family portrait, food, a poster, a birthday card, a pet, and a few impossible scenes. Both models got exactly the same words, one try each, and we kept the first picture without retouching it. We judged how well each picture followed the description and how good it would look printed or shared.

One try each is a small test: ask again and you’ll get a different picture. Treat the winners as a guide, and try your own idea with both. To see how GPT Image does against Google’s models, read GPT Image vs Nano Banana Pro.

Frequently asked questions

Is GPT Image better than Flux?

In our test, yes. GPT Image 2.5 Flare won 6 of our 8 rounds and the other 2 were ties. Flux 2 Pro didn't win a round, but its pictures were never bad: they were calmer and left out small parts of the description.

Who makes Flux?

Flux is made by Black Forest Labs, often shortened to BFL. Flux 2 Pro is one of its image models.

Which one is better at writing words in pictures?

Both spelled “VISIT LISBON” and “Happy 60th, Maria!” correctly. GPT Image 2.5 Flare made the words bigger and the design bolder, so we'd start there for posters and cards.

Which one makes fewer mistakes?

Neither made a spelling mistake or added a strange extra. Flux 2 Pro more often left things out, like the tram climbing a hill. GPT Image drew human boot prints next to the dog on the moon.

Which one is faster?

We timed two of the pictures. Flux 2 Pro took 10 seconds for each and GPT Image 2.5 Flare 12 seconds. You won't notice the difference.

Can they edit a photo I already have?

On chatmodel, GPT Image 2.5 Flare can change a photo you upload, for example a new background. Flux 2 Pro only makes new pictures from a description.

Is it free?

On chatmodel, both are included in the Pro plan, along with every other image model. See the pricing page for the current prices.

Can I try both with the same description?

Yes. On chatmodel's Image page, write your description once, create it with one model, then switch to the other and create again.

Were these pictures edited?

No. These are the first pictures each model made from the description shown, only resized to fit the page.

Use both, in one place
