Test 1 · A condolence card
A condolence card: a tie
What we asked
Help me write a short condolence card for my neighbor, whose husband passed away last week. We weren't very close, but he always waved to me in the mornings. I want it to feel warm and sincere, not formal. Keep it under 70 words.
Dear [Neighbor's Name],
I was so sorry to hear about your husband’s passing. I will always remember his friendly waves in the mornings—it was such a nice start to the day.
Please know that I am thinking of you during this difficult time. If you ever need a hand with anything, or just someone to run an errand, I'm right next door.
Sending peace and comfort,
[Your Name]
Here are two options to choose from:
Option 1:
Dear [Neighbor's Name],
I was so deeply sorry to hear about [Husband's Name]. I’ll really miss seeing him outside and catching his friendly morning wave—it always brought a smile to my day. Please know I’m thinking of you. If you need anything at all, even just someone to grab your mail or run an errand, I’m right next door.
Warmly,
[Your Name]
Option 2 (Slightly shorter):
Dear [Neighbor's Name],
Sending you my heartfelt condolences. I will miss [Husband's Name]’s warm smile and morning wave across the yard—his kindness was such a lovely part of our neighborhood. I’m holding you in my thoughts during this difficult time. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything at all.
With warmth,
[Your Name]
A tie. Both used the morning wave and stayed under 70 words. Pro wrote one warm card that offers to “run an errand”. Flash gave two versions to choose from, though the second added a “warm smile” you never mentioned.
Test 2 · Understanding a confusing letter
A confusing insurance letter: Flash, by a nose
What we asked
I got this letter from my health insurance and I don't understand it. Explain in plain words what it means and what I should do next. "Dear Member, We have reviewed the claim submitted by Riverside Imaging for services rendered on 08/14. The claim has been processed and the allowed amount of $412.00 has been applied to your annual deductible. Your remaining deductible for the plan year is $588.00. This is not a bill. You may receive a statement from your provider for the amount you owe. If you disagree with this decision, you have 180 days to file an appeal."
Here is what this letter means in plain English, along with what you need to do next.
The Bottom Line
You owe $412.00 for the imaging service (like an X-ray, MRI, or ultrasound) you got on August 14th. The insurance company is not paying for it because you haven't met your yearly deductible yet.
What the letter means, piece by piece:
- "The allowed amount of $412.00": Riverside Imaging might have originally tried to charge a higher price, but your insurance company has a contract with them. They agreed that the maximum they are allowed to charge you for this specific service is $412.00.
- "Applied to your annual deductible": A deductible is the amount of your own money you have to spend on medical care each year before your insurance starts paying the bills. Because you haven't reached that limit yet, the insurance company is passing this $412.00 charge directly to you.
- "Your remaining deductible... is $588.00": After this $412.00 charge, you only have to spend $588.00 more of your own money on healthcare this year. Once you pay that remaining $588, your insurance will start paying for your medical care.
- "This is not a bill": This letter is just a receipt from your insurance company showing their math (called an Explanation of Benefits, or EOB).
What you should do next:
- Do nothing right now. Do not send money to your health insurance company.
- Wait for the bill in the mail. Riverside Imaging will eventually send you a bill directly.
- Compare the numbers. When the bill from Riverside Imaging arrives, make sure it asks for exactly $412.00. (Sometimes doctors try to bill you for the original, higher amount—if they do, you can call them and tell them your insurance says you only owe the "allowed amount" of $412).
- Pay Riverside Imaging. Once you confirm the bill says $412.00, you will pay Riverside Imaging directly.
(Note: The letter mentions an "appeal." You only need to worry about that if you think this is a mistake—for example, if you didn't go to Riverside Imaging on August 14th, or if you know you have already paid off your entire deductible for the year. Otherwise, you can ignore the appeal part!)
Here is a plain-English breakdown of what that letter means and what you should do next.
What this letter means
- This is an "Explanation of Benefits" (EOB), not a bill. Your insurance company is just letting you know they reviewed the paperwork from your August 14 visit to Riverside Imaging.
- You will likely owe $412.00. The imaging center may have originally charged more, but your insurance has a contracted rate (the "allowed amount") of $412.00 for this service.
- Why isn't insurance paying it? You haven't met your deductible yet for the year. A deductible is the amount you have to pay out of your own pocket before your insurance starts covering costs.
- Your deductible progress: After this $412.00, you have $588.00 left to pay toward other medical care this year before your insurance starts picking up the bill (meaning your total yearly deductible was likely $1,000).
What you should do next
- Do not pay your insurance company. You do not owe them any money.
- Wait for a bill from Riverside Imaging. It should arrive in the mail or in your online patient portal.
- Compare the amounts when the bill arrives. When Riverside Imaging sends you a bill, verify that the total matches the $412.00 from this letter.
- If it matches, pay Riverside Imaging.
- If they bill you for more than $412.00, call the imaging center and tell them your insurance EOB shows the allowed amount is $412.00.
- Only take action if something is wrong. If you never went to Riverside Imaging on August 14, or if you believe your plan should have covered this service without applying it to your deductible (for example, if it was supposed to be 100% covered preventive care), you have 180 days to call your insurer and appeal the decision. Otherwise, you don't need to appeal.
Winner: Gemini 3.8 Flash. Both got it right: this is not a bill, and you'll probably owe $412. Flash was a little more complete, with the bill possibly arriving in your online patient portal and when an appeal makes sense, and it took 6 seconds against 15.
Test 3 · Spotting a scam
Spotting a scam: Pro tells you where to report it
What we asked
Is this email a scam? What should I do? "USPS: Your package could not be delivered due to an incomplete address. To avoid return to sender, please confirm your details and pay the $1.99 redelivery fee within 24 hours: usps-redelivery-help.com/track"
Yes, this is absolutely a scam. This is a very common phishing tactic known as a "smishing" (SMS phishing) or email phishing scam.
Here is exactly how you can tell it’s fake, and what you should do next.
How to tell it's a scam (The Red Flags):
- The Link is Fake: The official United States Postal Service website is always USPS.com. The link provided (
usps-redelivery-help.com) is a fake website created by scammers to steal your credit card information. - USPS Doesn't Charge for Redelivery: The real USPS does not charge a fee to redeliver a package. Redelivery is a free service.
- False Sense of Urgency: Scammers use phrases like "within 24 hours" and "avoid return to sender" to make you panic and click the link without thinking.
- USPS Doesn't Send Unsolicited Texts/Emails: USPS will not send you text messages or emails about a delivery issue unless you specifically signed up for tracking updates for a specific package.
What you should do:
- Do NOT click the link. If you click it, it may confirm to the scammers that your email/phone number is active, or it could download malware onto your device.
- Do NOT provide any personal or financial information.
- Report it:
- If you received this as an email, forward it to the US Postal Inspection Service at spam@uspis.gov, and then delete it.
- If you received this as a text message, forward the text to 7726 (SPAM) to report it to your cell carrier, then delete and block the number.
- Track your real packages securely: If you are actually expecting a package, go directly to the official
USPS.comwebsite on your browser and type in your tracking number there.
If you already clicked the link and paid the $1.99: Call your credit card company or bank immediately, tell them you gave your card number to a scammer, and ask them to cancel the card and issue you a new one. Scammers use that $1.99 fee to test the card, and will soon make much larger fraudulent purchases.
Yes, this is 100% a scam.
This is an extremely common phishing attack known as "smishing" (or email phishing) designed to steal your credit card details and personal identity.
How to tell it's fake:
- The web address is wrong: The official United States Postal Service website is strictly usps.com. Fraudulent domains like
usps-redelivery-help.comare created by scammers to mimic official portals. - USPS does not charge redelivery fees: Standard package redelivery through the USPS is free. Scammers ask for a tiny amount (like $1.99) so you let your guard down, but their real goal is to capture your full credit card number, expiration date, and CVV.
- Artificial urgency: Claims that you must act "within 24 hours" are designed to make you panic and click without thinking.
- They wouldn't have your contact info: If an address is incomplete, USPS has no way of knowing your email address or phone number to contact you about it.
What you should do:
- Do not click the link. If you haven't clicked it yet, simply delete the email or mark it as spam/phishing in your email provider.
- If you already clicked the link but didn't enter information: Close the tab immediately. You are likely safe, but avoid downloading any files the site prompts you to accept.
- If you entered your credit or debit card details:
- Call your bank or credit card company immediately. Tell them you entered your card details on a phishing website. Have them cancel the card and issue a new one.
- Monitor your statements closely for unauthorized transactions.
- If you entered personal details (address, Social Security number, passwords):
- Change any passwords that were entered or associated with that email address.
- If sensitive personal information was shared, consider placing a temporary fraud alert or credit freeze with the three major credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion).
Winner: Gemini 3.1 Pro. Both said clearly it's a scam and explained what to do if you already paid. Only Pro gave the right places to report it: forward the email to spam@uspis.gov, or a text to 7726. Flash never said where to report it.
Test 4 · A firm but polite complaint
A complaint to an airline: Pro strikes a politer tone
What we asked
Write a firm but polite email to an airline. My suitcase was lost on my flight five days ago, I filed a report at the airport (reference LX-48213), and nobody has contacted me since. I want an update and to know how to claim for the things I had to buy. Keep it short.
Subject: Urgent: Update Required on Lost Baggage - Reference LX-48213
Dear Customer Service Team,
I am writing regarding my suitcase, which was lost on my flight five days ago. I filed a report at the airport immediately (Reference: LX-48213), but I have not received any updates or communication from your team since.
Please provide a status update on my luggage as soon as possible. Additionally, please send me the instructions and forms required to submit a reimbursement claim for the essential items I have had to purchase out of pocket due to this delay.
I expect to hear from you promptly to get this resolved.
Sincerely,
[Your Name] [Your Phone Number] [Your Email Address] [Your Flight Number / Date]
Subject: URGENT: Status Update and Expense Claim – Lost Baggage (Ref: LX-48213)
Dear Baggage Services Team,
I am writing regarding my delayed suitcase from flight [Flight Number] on [Date], file reference LX-48213.
It has now been five days since I filed the report at the airport, and I have received no updates or communication from your team.
Please provide the current tracking status and expected delivery time of my bag immediately. Additionally, as I have had to purchase essential clothing and toiletries over the last five days, please send the link and instructions for submitting these receipts for interim expense reimbursement.
I expect a prompt response regarding this matter.
Sincerely,
[Your Name]
[Your Phone Number]
Winner: Gemini 3.1 Pro. Both were short and included the reference number. You asked for firm but polite: Pro was firm (“I expect to hear from you promptly”). Flash's “URGENT” subject line and “immediately” came across as pushier than needed.
Test 5 · Dinner from what's in the fridge
Dinner from what's in the fridge: Flash, for the safety detail
What we asked
I have 4 chicken thighs, some potatoes, 3 carrots, half an onion and a lemon. Suggest one easy dinner for four that takes under 45 minutes, with short numbered steps.
Here is an easy Sheet Pan Lemon Chicken and Root Vegetables that uses all your ingredients and requires minimal cleanup.
(Note: You will just need basic pantry staples like cooking oil, salt, and pepper).
- Preheat and Prep: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Wash and chop the potatoes and 3 carrots into small, 1/2-inch cubes (cutting them small ensures they cook in under 35 minutes). Roughly chop the half onion.
- Combine: Place the chopped potatoes, carrots, onion, and the 4 chicken thighs onto a large baking sheet.
- Season: Drizzle everything generously with oil, the juice of half the lemon, salt, and pepper. Toss well with your hands until the chicken and vegetables are fully coated.
- Arrange: Spread the ingredients out in a single flat layer, making sure the chicken thighs are resting on top (skin-side up, if they have skin). Thinly slice the remaining half of the lemon and tuck the slices around the pan.
- Bake: Roast in the oven for 30–35 minutes until the chicken is fully cooked through (juices run clear) and the potatoes and carrots are fork-tender. Serve hot!
One-Pan Lemon-Herb Roasted Chicken & Veggies
Prep time: 10 mins | Cook time: 30–35 mins | Pantry staples needed: Olive oil, salt, pepper, dried oregano (or Italian seasoning), garlic powder (optional).
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Chop veggies: Cut potatoes into 1-inch cubes (smaller cooks faster), slice carrots into rounds, and cut the onion into wedges.
- Season veggies: Toss the vegetables directly on a large baking sheet with 1 tbsp oil, salt, pepper, and oregano. Spread them out to the edges.
- Prep chicken: Place the 4 chicken thighs in the center of the pan. Drizzle with 1 tbsp oil, season both sides generously with salt, pepper, oregano, and garlic powder.
- Add lemon: Cut the lemon in half. Squeeze one half over the chicken and veggies. Slice the other half and scatter the slices across the pan.
- Bake: Roast for 30–35 minutes until the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) and the potatoes are tender and golden.
- Serve: Spoon the pan juices over the chicken and vegetables right before serving.
Winner: Gemini 3.8 Flash. Both suggested the same lemon chicken tray bake. Flash gave the safe cooking temperature (165°F) and listed the pantry basics you'll need. Pro only said to cook until the juices run clear.
Test 6 · Explaining money in plain words
Explaining money in plain words: a tie
What we asked
Explain the difference between a Roth IRA and a traditional IRA in plain words, like you'd explain it to a friend over coffee. Keep it under 150 words and add one simple example.
The main difference between a Traditional and a Roth IRA is simply when you pay taxes.
With a Traditional IRA, you get a tax break today. You don't pay taxes on the money you put in now, but you will pay taxes when you pull it out in retirement.
With a Roth IRA, it's the exact opposite. You pay taxes upfront, but the money grows tax-free, and you don't owe a single penny to the IRS when you withdraw it later.
Quick example: Let’s say you invest $5,000. In a Traditional IRA, you deduct that $5,000 from this year's income taxes, but you'll be taxed on it (and all its growth) at age 65. In a Roth IRA, you pay taxes on that $5,000 today, but at 65, that original money plus all the profit it made is 100% yours, completely tax-free.
Think of the difference as paying taxes now vs. paying taxes later.
With a Traditional IRA, you get a tax break today. The money you put in reduces this year’s taxes, but you’ll pay taxes on everything—contributions and growth—when you take it out in retirement.
With a Roth IRA, you use money you’ve already paid taxes on. You don't get a tax break today, but every penny it earns grows tax-free, and retirement withdrawals are 100% tax-free.
Simple Example: Imagine investing $5,000 that grows into $20,000 by retirement.
- With the Traditional IRA, you didn't pay taxes on the $5,000 upfront, but you must pay taxes on the whole $20,000 later.
- With the Roth IRA, you paid taxes on the $5,000 upfront, but that entire $20,000 is yours to keep, completely tax-free.
A tie. Both explained Roth and traditional IRAs clearly, under 150 words, with a $5,000 example. Flash showed the money growing to $20,000, which makes it easy to picture. Neither replaces a financial adviser.
Test 7 · A bedtime story for a grandchild
A bedtime story: Pro keeps Leo at the center
What we asked
Write a short bedtime story, about 200 words, for my 6-year-old grandson Leo, who loves dinosaurs and is a bit scared of the dark. Make it calm, with a gentle happy ending.
Once upon a time, a little boy named Leo was getting ready for bed. Leo loved dinosaurs more than anything in the world. He had T-Rex pajamas, Triceratops slippers, and a favorite stuffed Brachiosaurus named Barnaby.
But when the sun went down and the shadows grew long, Leo felt a little bit scared. The dark seemed so big and quiet.
As his room grew dark, Leo hugged Barnaby tight. Suddenly, he noticed something magical. The little stars on his dinosaur blanket began to glow, casting a soft, gentle light.
"Don't worry, Leo," a cozy voice seemed to whisper. It was Barnaby! "The dark isn't scary. It’s just a giant, warm cave for us to rest in. Without the quiet dark, we couldn't see the beautiful glowing stars."
Leo looked at his glowing blanket and smiled. He imagined he and Barnaby were resting in a safe, snug dinosaur nest under a prehistoric, twinkling sky. The dark didn't feel big and scary anymore; it felt like a soft, sleepy hug.
Leo closed his heavy eyes, holding his brave dinosaur friend close. "Goodnight, Barnaby," he whispered, drifting into happy, peaceful dinosaur dreams.
Deep in the sleepy green valley, Pip the little Triceratops was getting ready for bed. The sun had slipped behind the mountains, and shadows stretched across the fern trees. Pip shivered a little. The forest looked so big and dark.
Suddenly, a soft glow appeared. A tiny firefly landed right on Pip’s nose.
“Don’t worry, little dino,” the firefly buzzed softly. “The dark is just the blanket the world pulls up to sleep.”
Pip’s mother nuzzled him with her warm, scaly snout. “Look up, my brave Leo-saurus,” she whispered.
Pip looked. Above the tall treetops, thousands of friendly stars blinked awake, twinkling like nightlights just for him. The friendly moon smiled down, bathing the quiet jungle in a cool, silvery glow. The shadows weren't scary at all; they were just sleeping dinosaurs, resting for tomorrow’s grand adventures.
A gentle night breeze hummed a lullaby through the leaves. Pip tucked his feet in, feeling safe, cozy, and very warm beside his mama.
He let out a tiny, happy yawn. The dark wasn’t so big after all. It was peaceful.
Pip closed his eyes, ready for sweet, starry dreams. Goodnight, strong dinosaur. Goodnight, brave Leo.
Winner: Gemini 3.1 Pro. Pro put Leo in his room with his stuffed dinosaur Barnaby and a blanket whose stars begin to glow. Flash's story was about a Triceratops called Pip, and then the mother calls him “Leo-saurus”, which is a bit confusing.
Test 8 · Planning a short trip
Planning a trip: Pro keeps it relaxed
What we asked
Plan a relaxed 3-day trip to Lisbon for my wife and me. We're in our sixties, we don't want long walks up steep hills, and we love food and views. Give a simple plan for each day with one or two tips.
Here is a relaxed, 3-day itinerary for Lisbon designed specifically to avoid steep hills while maximizing beautiful views and delicious food.
Day 1: The Flat Center and a Sunset Sail
Morning: Start in the Baixa district, which is entirely flat. Wander around the magnificent Praça do Comércio, a grand plaza right on the water. Take a slow, flat stroll up the pedestrian street, Rua Augusta, stopping for a coffee and some people-watching. Lunch: Head to the Time Out Market (Mercado da Ribeira). It’s completely flat and gathers some of Portugal’s best chefs under one roof, so you can sample wonderful local dishes and wine without walking from restaurant to restaurant. Afternoon/Evening: Rather than climbing to a viewpoint, let the views come to you. Book a sunset sailing cruise on the Tagus River (many depart right near the Praça do Comércio). It’s incredibly relaxing, and you’ll get stunning views of the city hills and the Golden Gate-style bridge while sipping Portuguese wine.
- Tips for the Day:
- Download the Uber or Bolt app before your trip. Fares in Lisbon are surprisingly cheap (often €4–€7), making them the perfect way to bypass sudden hills or cobblestone fatigue.
- Skip the famous Tram 28 today; it gets incredibly crowded and requires standing in long lines.
Day 2: Belém’s History and Famous Pastries
Morning: Take a short taxi/Uber ride to the Belém neighborhood. This area is wide open, flat, and sits right along the river. View the stunning Jerónimos Monastery and the Monument to the Discoveries without breaking a sweat. Lunch: Walk over to Pastéis de Belém, the birthplace of Portugal's famous custard tarts. Enjoy a light lunch of savory Portuguese snacks (like cod fritters) and, of course, warm pastéis de nata with cinnamon and powdered sugar. Afternoon: Take a leisurely, flat stroll along the riverside promenade towards the MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology). You don't have to go inside; the building itself and the waterfront views are wonderful. Enjoy a relaxed seafood dinner at one of the flat riverside restaurants nearby.
- Tips for the Day:
- At Pastéis de Belém, do not stand in the long outdoor line—that is for takeout only. Walk straight inside and navigate through the maze of rooms; you will easily find a table to sit and be served.
Day 3: Alfama Charm (Without the Climb!)
Morning: The oldest neighborhood, Alfama, is beautiful but notorious for steep, slippery hills. Instead of walking, book a 2-hour private Tuk-Tuk tour. The driver will navigate the narrow, winding alleys and take you to the highest, most breathtaking viewpoints in the city (like Miradouro da Senhora do Monte) while you sit back comfortably. Lunch: Ask your Tuk-Tuk driver to drop you off right at the door of a traditional restaurant in the Graça or Alfama district so you don’t have to walk there. Try a classic Bacalhau (salted cod) dish or Garlic Shrimp. Afternoon: Take an Uber to the National Tile Museum (Museu Nacional do Azulejo). It’s housed in a former convent, is mostly flat/accessible, and features a gorgeous café with a courtyard garden that is perfect for an afternoon rest. Evening: For your final dinner, make a reservation at a restaurant with an elevator-accessible view, such as BAHR or Rossio Gastrobar, where you can enjoy excellent food overlooking the illuminated city and castle.
- Tips for the Day:
- When booking a Tuk-Tuk, ask for an electric one. They are silent and don't smell like exhaust, making the ride much more pleasant.
- Wear shoes with thick, rubber soles. Even on flat ground, Lisbon's beautiful mosaic sidewalks (calçada) can be quite slippery.
Here is a relaxed, 3-day itinerary designed to give you the best views and food in Lisbon without the exhausting uphill climbs.
Day 1: Historic Elegance & Riverfront Dining (Baixa & Chiado)
The downtown area is mostly flat, making it the easiest introduction to the city.
- Morning: Take a gentle stroll through Praça do Comércio, Lisbon’s grand riverfront square. Walk along the flat pedestrian street of Rua Augusta.
- Lunch: Eat at Taberna Moderna or Almeja for refined, contemporary Portuguese dishes.
- Afternoon: Rather than walking up the hill, take an inexpensive taxi/Uber directly up to Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara. This is a flat, landscaped terrace garden with benches, shade, and stunning views looking across to St. George's Castle.
- Evening: Have a relaxed dinner in Chiado. Try Cervejaria Trindade, historic beer hall and seafood restaurant set in a former monastery with beautiful azulejo tiles.
Day 2: Flat River Walks & Pastries (Belém)
Belém is completely flat, sits right on the water, and is the culinary home of Portugal's famous custard tart.
- Morning: Take a 15-minute taxi to Belém. Start at Pastéis de Belém to try warm pastéis de nata dusted with cinnamon. Sit inside (the seated area is large and avoids the long takeaway line).
- Midday: Take a very gentle, flat stroll along the water to see the Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries. (Both have wide, paved paths with sea breezes).
- Lunch: Dine at Nunes Real Marisqueira, one of the city's finest seafood restaurants, famous for fresh lobster, giant tiger prawns, and garlic clams.
- Evening: Head back to central Lisbon for an easy evening. Book a Sunset Sailing Cruise on the Tagus River (many 2-hour cruises leave from Doca de Belém or Cais do Sodré)—it is the most effortless way to see Lisbon's famous hills, bathed in golden light, with zero walking.
Day 3: Modern Views & Alfama by Tuk-Tuk
Alfama has the best traditional views, but the hills are brutal. Today, let wheels do the work.
- Morning: Hire a private electric Tuk-Tuk (easily booked near central plazas or via your hotel) for a 90-minute tour. Ask the driver to take you to the top viewpoints: Miradouro da Senhora do Monte and Miradouro de Santa Luzia. You’ll get the panoramic postcard views without taking a single uphill step.
- Lunch: Have your driver drop you near Ponto Final. (Note: This requires a short 5-minute ferry ride across to Cacilhas, but you dine right at the water's edge looking back at the entire Lisbon skyline—truly unforgettable food and view). Alternatively, stay on the city side and enjoy upscale Portuguese food at Bairro do Avillez.
- Afternoon: Head to the flat, modern Parque das Nações neighborhood. Take a ride on the Telecabine Lisboa (cable car), which glides smoothly above the river, offering sweeping views of the Vasco da Gama bridge.
- Dinner: End your trip with dinner accompanied by traditional Fado music in a comfortable setting, such as Clube de Fado in Alfama (take a taxi straight to the door).
Top Tips for Your Trip:
- Embrace Uber or Bolt (Skip Tram 28): While the historic yellow trams look romantic, Tram 28 is almost always overcrowded, requires standing, and is targeted by pickpockets. Uber and Bolt are exceptionally cheap in Lisbon (often just €4–€8 per ride) and will happily drop you right at the entrance of hilltop viewpoints.
- Watch the Cobblestones (Calçada): Lisbon’s traditional black-and-white stone sidewalks are beautiful, but they can be very slick (even when dry) and uneven. Leave the leather-soled dress shoes at home and wear supportive, rubber-soled walking shoes with good grip.
Winner: Gemini 3.1 Pro. Both avoided hills with taxis, a river cruise and a tuk-tuk. Pro's days had room to rest, like the café at the tile museum. Flash packed day 3 with a tuk-tuk tour, a ferry, a cable car and fado, and had the tuk-tuk driver drop you at a restaurant that's across the river.

Why two Gemini models?
Google makes Gemini in more than one version. The names help: Pro is the careful one, Flash the quick one. In our test, Gemini 3.1 Pro took about 13 seconds per answer and Gemini 3.8 Flash about 6. Their answers were about the same length (around 250 words), so what you notice is the wait, not the reading.
Flash is the more recent of the two: it came out in September 2026, and Pro in February 2026. Newer did not mean better in our test, though. Pro was more careful on the answers that mattered most.
What it costs, in plain words
Google sells its own monthly plans for Gemini. In chatmodel, Gemini 3.1 Pro and Gemini 3.8 Flash are both included in one plan, Pro, together with ChatGPT’s GPT models, Claude, Grok and many others. So the choice between them is about speed and care, not money. You can also start for free with Instant. See the current prices on the pricing page.
Can you trust what they say?
Both are good, and both can still make mistakes. In our test, the quick one was more likely to leave something out: Flash explained the scam well but never said where to report it. A fast answer is great for a recipe; for something you’ll act on, a second look pays off.
A few simple habits help:
- Double-check anything you’ll act on: phone numbers, web addresses, dates and amounts.
- Health, money and legal questions: use the answer to understand your situation and prepare questions, then confirm with a doctor, adviser or the company itself.
- Don’t share what you wouldn’t share with a stranger: passwords, full card numbers or ID numbers.
How we tested
We wrote 8 everyday tasks, the kind of things people actually ask: a condolence card, an insurance letter, a scam email, a complaint, dinner, a money question, a bedtime story and a trip. We gave Gemini 3.1 Pro and Gemini 3.8 Flash exactly the same words in chatmodel, one try each, timed each answer and kept what came back without editing it. Then we compared the answers for accuracy, how well they followed the request and how useful they’d be to a real person.
One try each is a small test. The same model can answer a little differently each time, and the seconds depend on how busy the service is, so treat the winners and times as a guide, not a final score. You can run any of these tests yourself with one click.
