How it works

  1. 1 Open Create a Spreadsheet and describe what you want to track and which columns you need.
  2. 2 Send it and wait a moment while it builds the spreadsheet.
  3. 3 When the spreadsheet is ready, download it and open it in Excel or a similar app.

Examples

See what it does

What you give it, and what you get back.

What you put in

“Create a spreadsheet with a monthly family budget: income, fixed bills, groceries, fuel, eating out and savings, with a total for each month and the difference between income and spending.”

What you get back

An Excel file with a row for each category and a column for each month, with totals and the monthly difference worked out for you to fill with your own numbers.

What Create a Spreadsheet does

Create a Spreadsheet builds a real spreadsheet from your description. You say what you want to keep track of, and it sets up the columns, the rows and the totals for you.

It works in the chat. While it works you’ll see “Building your spreadsheet…”, and when it’s ready you can download the file and open it in Excel or another spreadsheet app.

This is the easy way to get started if you’ve always meant to keep a budget but never knew how to set one up. Describe it in plain words, download it, and fill it in.

Because it’s a chat, you can ask for changes afterwards: “Add a column for notes”, “Split groceries into food and household”, “Make it for a whole year”.

Good to know

There are no settings to choose. Everything goes in your message: the columns, what should add up, and the time frame.

You don’t have to share your real numbers. Ask for an empty template, or one with example numbers so you can see how it works, and put your own figures in afterwards.

What it won’t do

  • It won’t connect to your bank or fill in your spending for you.
  • It won’t give financial advice. It builds the table; the decisions are yours.
  • It can make a mistake in a formula. Check that the totals add up with a couple of test numbers.
  • Very complex spreadsheets, with many linked sheets, may need tidying by hand.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get?

A spreadsheet file (.xlsx) you can download and open in Excel, Google Sheets or Numbers.

Do I have to give it my real numbers?

No. You can ask for an empty template and fill it in yourself after you download it.

Can it add totals and calculations?

Say what you want added up or compared, and it builds that into the spreadsheet. Check the totals with a couple of test numbers before you rely on them.

Can I change it afterwards?

Yes. Edit the downloaded file, or ask in the chat for a new version with more columns or a different layout.

Can it read a spreadsheet I already have?

Yes. Attach your Excel file in the chat and ask about it, or ask for a new version based on it.
